Head Tattoos

With so many people opting for tattoos in our modern society, there is now more emphasis than ever before on the placement of body art as tattoo enthusiasts the world over strive to find more unusual locations to display these. One of the least common choices however has to be that of head tattoos however these are probably not as rare as you think they are.

Initially, these were popular among bald men who used this form of body art to celebrate their lack of hair rather than trying to conceal it, and what better canvas for head tattoos than this large area of skin in a very prominent location? This form of body art may involve a few images of a certain design inked randomly across the skull, such as half a dozen stars in either monochrome or in a variety of bright colors. However there are those who take this idea to the extreme covering every inch of the head in a design or pattern that covers almost every inch, leaving little or no skin showing through at all.

There are more subtle, discrete takes on traditional head tattoos where the artwork is concentrated to a certain small area like the forehead, brow or eye area. The latter probably conjure images of prison inmates with tears inked on their face, a practice that was believed to denote every life they had taken represented by one tear. Spider web designs around the face were another favorite with those who had spent time in the penal system however facial tattoos are no longer just for the criminal fraternity.

The renowned tattoo artist from the reality TV show “Miami Ink” has a very pretty inking on her face along and around her brow, which features thirteen tiny stars. I have seen similar facial designs on females using tiny flowers or butterflies to a similar effect which looks really pretty and totally changes the stigma previously connected to this type of tattoo.

There will always be those who go over the top with facial and head tattoos such as the lizard man who has his entire body – from head to toes – covered in markings inked to resemble the green scales of a lizard. Lady Gaga copied the skeletal artwork of the tattooed model Zombie Boy in her music video for Born This Way. Both appeared together side by side in the video and it was difficult to tell the difference, however Zombie boy’s entire face, head and body is actually permanently tattooed in this way.
