In our modern world, the art of tattooing can be seen absolutely everywhere and on people from all different elements of society, young and old, male and female. To make the ink, these inventive inmates burn the heel of a shoe then mix the soot produced with urine before injecting it into the skin with the likes of a sharpened guitar string on an electric shaver. While this may seem a rather severe method, bare in mind that tattooing in prison is not always voluntary and is often used to stigmatize or punish those individuals who are deemed the lowest of the low in prison ‘society’ such as sex offenders and child-killers.
