There are certain body parts that are much more popular than others when it comes to tattoo placement and there are several reasons for this. Firstly, many people have to consider whether having a tattoo in a prominent location is suitable for their work place so this is a major factor for many. If you are looking at calf tattoos then these would be suited for guys in a professional environment as they can be concealed conveniently beneath trousers however as a skirt-wearing female this would not be quite as ideal. While this was a location, more predominantly requested by male tattoo enthusiasts there are many females now who sport designs on this particular body part especially for those who want to avoid more girly designs and placements.
For those who work in a less formal profession, calf tattoos look pretty cool and sexy, especially on a muscular physique and these can be shown off to great effect during the summer when wearing shorts. Designs for this area come in a multitude of shapes and sizes too so you can opt for a sleeve-effect that covers most of the skin area or go for a smaller individual image to show off on its own. These can also be extended further up the leg or down around the ankle and foot areas for those who prefer a more elaborate creation. Tattooists in general are at their most creative when they have a large canvas to work on so if you have well toned calves you could go for an intricate tribal pattern that will really accentuates your physical attributes in this area. Exotic floral designs such as the orchid or hibiscus also look fantastic inked on this area on a larger scale and this is a favorite with many females who opt for this more unusual choice of placement.
There is however a downside to calf tattoos, which is the pain factor involved. This is apparently a very tender area which can be extremely painful especially for larger more intricately detailed work involving a lot of time and effort. However, if this is of concern to you then it may be worth pointing out that the calf is quite a large area and some areas are more sensitive than others to the tattooist’s needle. The back of the calf is generally where most of the muscle lies so this is less painful than skin that is closer to the bone with less tissue to protect it so you may want to go for a smaller design to avoid more sensitive parts.
